Arizona Water Company and Microvi Secure $9.1 Million from Bureau of Reclamation’s WaterSMART Program
HAYWARD, CA (June 5, 2024) – Arizona Water Company, in collaboration with Microvi Biotech, Inc., has been awarded $9.1 million in funding from the United States Bureau of Reclamation’s WaterSMART program. This funding will support the Stanfield Groundwater Supply and Treatment Project, a critical initiative to address nitrate and arsenic contamination and ensure clean, safe drinking water for the rural community of Stanfield, Arizona.
The Stanfield community has long faced drought conditions and reliance on impaired groundwater sources, with nitrate and arsenic concentrations exceeding maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). This project will deploy Microvi’s innovative biological nitrate treatment system alongside a coagulation filtration system for arsenic removal, providing a sustainable solution for water treatment. Upon completion, the initiative will benefit approximately 640 residents by delivering a reliable supply of clean drinking water.
“This funding represents a major step forward in securing equitable access to clean water for the Stanfield community,” said Ali Dorri, VP of Business Development at Microvi. “By implementing cutting-edge biosolutions, we can transform water treatment efficiency and sustainability.”
Arizona Water Company and Microvi extend their gratitude to the key stakeholders who have supported this transformative project:
Maren Mahoney, Director, Governor’s Office of Resiliency
Teresa Martinez, Arizona Legislature, District 16
Steve Miller, Pinal County Board of Supervisors, District 3
Sharon Megdal, Director, University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center
