Microvi’s Announces Commercial Availability of Packaged Treatment Plants for Nitrate Removal in Drinking Water

Microvi announced today that the company’s patented MicroNiche Engineered™ (MNE) Technology for nitrate treatment in drinking water is now commercially available in standardized 2500-gallon (MNE Nitrate 2500 Series) and 10,000-gallon plants (MNE Nitrate 10000 series). The technology is NSF-61 certified for use in drinking water systems and is based on the same technology used at full-scale in Pasadena, California, since 2017, now available for deployment as a standardized modular system.

Nitrate is a common pollutant that affects the drinking water sources of people around the globe. High levels of nitrate have a number of negative human health impacts but are especially concerning for the elderly, pregnant people, and infants. Treatment methods for this contaminant are often cost-prohibitive for the small rural communities, which are often the most impacted by nitrate contamination.

“Microvi has invested significant time with our partners, stakeholders, and small communities to develop a cost effective nitrate treatment system that is sustainable and easy to operate, said Ali Dorri, VP of Business Development. “There is a strong demand for this type of treatment system for small and rural communities in California and around the world.”

Microvi’s nitrate treatment system features a stainless steel reactor which houses the MNE biocatalysts for nitrate removal, followed by an ultrafiltration membrane system and a disinfection system, which together polish the treated water from the reactor for potable use. The plant is controlled via an automated control system which is programmed for exact chemical dosing based on incoming nitrate levels and nitrate sampling via an on-line nitrate sensor. The system is equipped with remote control capabilities and requires minimum operator interference.

Significant benefits of Microvi’s standardized plants include:

  • Removal of up to 16,000 lbs of nitrate in a year (which scales with the number of units deployed to a site)

  • Production of up to 60 million gallons of potable water annually (the equivalent of up to 227 million 1L water bottles per year)

  • More than 92% reduction in non-hazardous waste compared to a regular biological system

  • No generation of hazardous waste as compared to a similarly sized ion exchange system, which could generate 500,000 gallons of hazardous waste

  • Up to 60% reduction in the cost of water compared to a similarly sized ion exchange plant

  • Available in a Design-Build-Own-Operate or a Design-Build-Own model to significantly reduce up-front costs to the customer

  • Average delivery time of 3-6 months

The Microvi nitrate treatment system was value-engineered to maximize utility while minimizing cost. The plants have already been field-tested at two separate sites for the removal of nitrate at levels over 13 mg-N/L and can handle nitrate spikes and well shutdowns with minimal loss of performance and low recovery times. The MNE nitrate treatment system can easily be scaled up for larger sites with the incorporation of additional units into the treatment train.

Along with the commercial drinking water treatment system operating in Pasadena, CA at Sunny Slope Water Company, the advantages of the Microvi MNE Nitrate 2500 series were demonstrated for nitrate removal by systems in the California communities of San Juan Bautista and Modesto, in partnership with Elemental Excelerator.
